I (Mário Henriques) remember of having learned the relationship of Father and Mother makes sense when it comes to help and support their children’s growth. This process implies giving them space to grow, which is not always easy for the parents. This relationship can be transported into a company’s Leadership. For the parents it is always complicated to face the moment in which their child goes for the first time to school, to the disco or even summer holidays. This is a moment lived with anxiety, insecurity and sometimes temptation to interfere. The same thing happens inside companies, for instance Jack Welch managed his succession by selecting a person that according to his words “would have to be an example of person who felt good inside his own skin”.  Taking into account that Millennium BCP is a different organization, its leader, namely, Jardim Gonçalves selected this type of new leadership, prepared it, but does not trust in it enough alike the father who is “behind the door” waiting to enter to avoid the son making any mistake, not giving him enough space.
A leader has to be a person, who is capable of supporting, encouraging, stimulating, defying and attributing responsibility to people.
